A Special Message from Annabeth ...

 »AG Blog / 20.July.06«

Dear Folks,

I have some disappointing news. Due to some extenuating circumstances and professional reasons I had to withdraw from the production of Lear. I was offered a job that I simply had to take. It was an agonizing decision but I will be replaced by a fantastic understudy who will surely take the role and run! The entire company has been supportive and gracious and anyone must surely still go to see this production as it will revitalize your understanding and experience of Shakespeare. I'll share more details later, but know that I took so much from my 4 weeks of rehearsals for the play and am forever changed for it - as an artist/actress and as a human being!

Best,
Annabeth

Hi all!

Hope everyone had a nice 4th of July holiday. I was actually in rehearsals for a few hours before coming home to make some bbq chicken and my grandmother's potato salad. It was a mellow, easy day. Rehearsals are going well. Every day is challenging and inspiring. Obviously being Shakespeare, the material itself is very complex and rich, but the exceptional weight of Lear's tragedy and the heightened agony suffered by each character in his family and in his kingdom, makes it rather daunting to perform. I've read some scholars who say it is one of the most impossible plays to put up. However, our director, Patsy Rodenburg, is astonishing in her knowledge of the text and in her ability to push us all into it with great faith and security. I know for sure that I am working under the hands of a master. Every day I am moved and driven by her tireless dedication to bringing Shakespeare to us, all of us, so it is accessible to our very breath and body. For the performer and audience. She is inspiring on a great many levels. Everyone in the company is digging in, doing great work, and passionate about this journey. I've asked Courtney to put up the article in the recent LA Stage magazine for anyone who might want more in-depth information about this production, Patsy, and the company she has assembled here in Los Angeles [SEE ABOVE]. If any of you are actors, performers, do public speaking of any kind, I would recommend you purchase any of her books about speaking and voice. They are invaluable resources.

For anyone who is interested, King Lear will open July 28th and run through August 27th at the Electric Lodge in Venice, CA. It is an intimate, 99 seat theatre. Tickets are available through BrownPaperTickets but specifically at this link: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/5475

And of course, last but not least, Brotherhood begins this Sunday night on Showtime!!!

That's the update! I hope everyone is healthy, safe and happy!

All the best,
Annabeth
